In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of self-publishing and why it might be the right choice for you.

Well, what even is self-publishing?
First, let’s define self-publishing. Self-publishing refers to the process of publishing a book independently, without the involvement of a traditional publisher. This can be done through a variety of means, such as print-on-demand services or online platforms like Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.
Contrast this with the traditional publishing process, which involves finding an agent, submitting a manuscript, getting rejected, trying again, having an existential crisis (we’ve all been there…), finding a publisher that actually wants to publish your book, and then having to go through rounds of edits and revisions with a publishing house that needs to make a profit from your work (trust us when we say this is just as challenging and time-consuming as it sounds). This process is lengthy, and it’s not uncommon for it to take years for a book to be published.
The rise of self-publishing as a viable alternative has been made possible by advances in technology (good news for you!). Print-on-demand services allow writers to produce physical copies of their books without having to worry about printing and storing large quantities of inventory. And with the proliferation of e-readers and the ease of publishing e-books online, self-publishing has become an attractive option for many writers and businesses.
Not quite sold just yet? Well, let’s look at some more of the benefits of self-publishing in detail.
The benefits of self-publishing a book
Creative control
One of the major benefits of self-publishing a book is creative control.
As a self-publishing author, you have complete control over the content of your book. You get to decide what goes in and what stays out, and you can make changes to the book as you see fit. Although you can (and should) elicit the help of an editor (and we provide this service as part of some of our packages), you have far more control over what stays in than you would going through a traditional publishing house.
In addition to control over the content, self-publishing also gives you control over the design of your book. This includes everything from the cover art to the font and layout. You get to decide how your book looks and feels, and you can make changes until you’re satisfied with the final product.
Finally, self-publishing gives you control over the marketing of your book. While traditional publishers often have their own marketing strategies, as a self-publisher, you have the freedom to promote your book in any way you see fit. This could include using social media, running ads, or participating in book festivals and events.
It’s faster
Self-publishing also allows for a faster turnaround time from writing to publication. While the traditional publishing process can take months or even years, self-publishing allows you to get your book out into the world much more quickly. And if you decide to make changes to your book after it’s been published, you can do so almost immediately. This is in contrast to traditional publishing, where you may have to go through the entire editing and publishing process again.

It’s more flexible
In addition to speed, self-publishing also allows for flexibility. With self-publishing, you have the freedom to publish any genre or format, and you can write about anything you want! This includes novels, non-fiction books, poetry, children’s books, and more. You also have the option to self-publish select chapters or sections as standalone pieces, which can be a great way to test the waters and see how your work is received before committing to a full-length book.
Better royalties (more money for you)
That’s right, with self-publishing you get more royalties than you would versus traditional publishing.
Traditionally, authors are paid a percentage of the sales of their books by publishing houses, often in the range of 10-15%. In contrast, when self-publishing through a platform like Amazon, authors can earn a higher percentage, up to 70%, and retain the rights for other forms of media adaptations such as film, television, and comics (if suitable of course…).
It can be a huge boost to your business
Self-publishing a book can be a valuable tool for promoting and growing your business. By writing a book, you can position yourself as an expert in your field, which can attract new customers to your business.
